Bio:
Hi! I'm Alan, a kind, enthusiastic native English-speaking ESL teacher from Sydney, Australia, Experienced in teaching adults, teens and kids- in classroom, small group and one-to-one, I create a relaxed atmosphere focusing on making lessons creative, fun, and interactive, targeting areas of need with clear, practical explanations and examples to help students feel comfortable and reach their potential to become articulate, confident English language speakers.
My teaching methodology:
⦿ Teaching in a friendly, easygoing but professional style. ⦿ Opportunities to practice speaking, grammar and new vocabulary, and also to ask questions at any time regarding anything you would like to understand better. ⦿ Practical, relevant, real world topics and media incorporated into lessons. ⦿ Reading, speaking, comprehension, online activities and discussion. ⦿ Tips on useful sentences, phrases and vocabulary in context to make understanding easy to grasp, including nuanced differences. ⦿ Pronunciation guidance for clarity or for accent. ⦿ Sensitivity and understanding in regard to the challenges of learning.
My teaching background:
I began my teaching career at one of Sydney's leading ESL colleges, teaching large classes of students from Asia and Europe, where I was highly regarded by students and received high commendation from college directors. I have also lived 7½ years in Tokyo, Japan, where I was contracted as lead English teacher for Tokyo's largest elementary school, provided extensive substitute teaching for the Greater Tokyo area, conducted teacher training programs, judged regional English speech competitions, and did demonstration lessons for Boards of Education. In each position I have held, I have been highly regarded and have built upon my skills. I also have several years' experience teaching online to students of different nationalities, ages, and English levels, and I look forward to furthering this experience and helping others to succeed in achieving their goals.
My background outside of teaching:
I grew up in beachside Sydney, and have a background in acting for television, movies and theatre. I have also trained and worked in film production and in music production/performance using synthesizers and other electronic instruments. I have lived long-term in both Japan, and Thailand, and have travelled considerably throughout Asia. My interests and hobbies include photography, travelling, music and languages.
